The Two Main Reasons Why Sales Conversations Don't Work

Here's how to avoid them.

I believe there are really only two reasons behind an unsuccessful sales conversation:

  1. Not listening properly

  2. Not being curious enough

Listening sounds simple, right? But it can be surprisingly hard to do, especially when you have other factors to think about, such as:

  • Nervousness around making the sale

  • You’ve rehearsed what you want to say and can’t deviate from it

It’s very easy to get caught up in what you want to say to your customer, or they may say one thing and you immediately want to jump in because you think you have the solution to that specific problem.

But if you’re not curious enough and don’t dig deeper into the issue/s, you may not uncover the real problem that needs solving and could miss the opportunity altogether.

Here’s what listening can help you with:

  1. Understanding Needs: Effective listening helps you to understand the specific needs and pain points of your customers. This allows you to tailor your conversation and provide solutions that truly resonate with them.

  2. Building Rapport: Active listening fosters trust and rapport. When customers feel heard and valued, they are more likely to engage positively with you.

  3. Handling Objections: By listening carefully, you can identify and address objections more effectively. Understanding the underlying concerns allows you to respond thoughtfully and persuasively.

  4. Gathering Insights: Listening can provide valuable insights into market trends and customer preferences, helping you to adapt your strategies and offerings.

  5. Enhancing Communication: Good listening skills improve overall communication. Salespeople who listen well can ask better questions, clarify misunderstandings, and guide conversations more effectively.

  6. Creating a Positive Experience: A focus on listening leads to a more satisfying customer experience, which can result in repeat business for you long term.

Next time you meet with a customer, make a conscious effort to listen, and I mean really listen.

Let me know how it goes!
